What is Betadine?

Betadine is an antiseptic product that primarily contains povidone-iodine, an iodine-based compound known for its broad-spectrum antimicrobial properties. Betadine is used on the skin to treat and prevent skin infection in minor cuts, scrapes, or burns. It works by releasing free iodine, which effectively kills bacteria, viruses, fungi, and protozoa on contact. To use, our podiatrist recommends putting a small amount of betadine on a Q-tip and applying to the affected area. Betadine may stain, so it is recommended to apply over the sink or a towel.
