As summer begins and the temperatures start to heat up, your feet are soon to get a lot more exposure. Summer is a season that can lead to a number of common foot problems if you’re not careful. From hot pavement to unsupportive flip-flops and long days on your feet, warm weather brings unique challenges. This is why it's so important to be smart with your footwear choices and foot care routine this summer. Below, our Wichita podiatrist offers some expert tips to keep your feet healthy, comfortable, and summer-ready.
Choose Supportive Close-Toed Shoes Over Flip-Flops
Summer is a time for lots of outdoor activity, so it is crucial that you choose supportive footwear to protect your feet from harm. Wearing improper shoes can cause pain in the feet and ankles, along with a number of other foot injuries. Some of the conditions that can be caused by improper shoes include:
In the summer, it's often our first instinct to throw on a pair of flip-flops. They may be a summer staple, but flip-flops offer little to no arch support, leave your feet exposed, and can be a big contributor to foot pain or injuries. Wearing close-toed shoes is the best way to keep your feet supported and protected, especially when you are spending a lot of time outdoors. When choosing shoes for your summer outings, look for close-toed options with the following features.
-
Arch support to maintain proper foot alignment
-
Cushioned soles to absorb shock during long walks
-
Adjustable straps to prevent sliding and friction
Brands that prioritize foot health often label their products as “orthopedic” or “podiatrist-recommended.” Wearing supportive shoes can help prevent common foot conditions and keep your feet comfortable.
Avoid Blisters from New Shoes and Heat
Blisters are one of the most common warm-weather complaints. Heat and friction are the perfect recipe for painful spots on your feet. To prevent blisters, keep the follow tips in mind.
-
Break in new shoes slowly—don’t wear them for the first time on a long day out.
-
Wear moisture-wicking socks if you're in closed-toe shoes.
-
Apply blister prevention products, such as friction sticks or padded bandages, to areas that are prone to rubbing.
-
Keep your feet dry to reduce the chances of blisters and fungal infections.
-
Change your socks regularly and let your shoes air out between wears.
Keep Feet Moisturized—But Not Too Moist
Hot weather and sandals can lead to dry, cracked heels. Apply a light moisturizer, Amerx Amerigel Blue, daily to keep the skin soft and healthy—especially after showering or before bed. If you are using any lotion other than Amerx Amerigel Blue, avoid putting lotion between your toes, where excess moisture can lead to fungal growth or yeast infections.
If you notice thickened skin or calluses, use a pumice stone or foot file gently. And don’t forget to stay hydrated—healthy skin starts from the inside out.
Don’t Forget Sunscreen for Your Feet
It’s easy to forget, but your feet can burn just like any other part of your body. Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher to the tops of your feet and toes before heading out. Reapply every two hours, especially after swimming or sweating.
Sunburned feet can be extremely painful—and long-term sun exposure increases the risk of skin cancer, even on the soles and between the toes.
Step Into Summer with Healthy Feet
Whether you're planning beach trips, backyard barbecues, or just soaking up the sunshine, your feet deserve some summer TLC. By choosing the right footwear, preventing blisters, keeping skin hydrated, and protecting against the sun, you’ll be ready to enjoy everything summer has to offer—without missing a step.
